CELEBRATE
ALEXANDER J. GIBSON DAY(S)
MARCH 24-25, 2006

Golfer Yes, it's that time again! Time to celebrate Alexander J. Gibson Day(s)!

This new holiday for golfers and golfers at heart takes place for the second time ever on March 24 and 25, 2006.

Gibson is the name of the protagonist of a novel (Golf in the Year 2000, Or, What We Are Coming To) published in 1892 that has astonished modern readers with its predictions of such developments as television, digital watches, bullet trains, driverless golf carts and women's liberation.

In the book, Gibson falls into a deep sleep on March 24, 1892, and awakens on March 25, 2000 to a world that has become a utopia--especially for anyone who happens to be mad about golf (see our home page for more information about the book, or read it here).

Since the Alexander J. Gibson holiday is still so new, there are no settled customs around it yet--and that's part of the fun!  People are encouraged to create their own traditions and share them with others.  The main idea is to have fun and be lighthearted!

How to Participate

Here are some suggestions, but don't feel bound by them. You can probably come up with much better ones!

If you golf, then hitting the links for a round or two would be an obvious way to pay tribute to Mr. Gibson and his creator, J. McCullough.

If you don't play golf, find other ways to celebrate Scottish heritage and traditions. This is a day for all of us to be "Scottish for a day."

Hold a group reading of Golf in the Year 2000. Inexpensive copies of recent printings of the book may be purchased from Amazon.com or other booksellers. You are also hereby granted permission to print out copies of the book pages from this web site.

Drink a toast to Mr. Gibson. The ideal drink for toasting would be a "whisky and potash," Gibson's preferred refreshment between rounds of golf. Unfortunately we do not know a recipe for this drink. As soon as we discover one, we will publish it on this site.

Practice old-fashioned gentlemanliness (even if you're a lady) of the kind exemplified by Alexander Gibson in Golf in the Year 2000. Cultivate the good humor and wit displayed by the book's author, J. McCullough (or J.A.C.K.)

Do something to improve yourself, whether it's working on your golf swing or making a decision to release negativity in your life and try new things. Remember, Alexander Gibson went to sleep on one day, closing his eyes forever on his old way of life, and opened them the "next" day to a shiny and better existence. This is a good metaphor for the virtually instant changes we can make in ourselves and our circumstances if we have a clear vision of what we want and a firm intention to transform that vision to reality.

LET US HEAR FROM YOU! Please tell us how you plan to celebrate Alexander J. Gibson Day(s), using this feedback form. Or, if it is now past March 25, use the feedback form to tell us how and where you celebrated, and with whom.  You can also submit your ideas for observing Alexander J. Gibson Day(s) in years to come.
