1892: It Was A Very Good Year

Here are some non-literary events that happened in 1892 (the year of publication of you-know-what-book): Tewfik, the Khedive of Egypt, died. Giolitti became premier of Italy. Prince Ito became premier of Japan. Gladstone became prime minister of Great Britain, and Parliament got its first Labour member. Grover Cleveland was elected president of the United States. Haile Selassie, future emperor of Ethiopia, was born. Monet began his series of paintings of the Rouen Cathedral. Toulouse-Lautrec painted "At the Mouliln Rouge." Bruckner debuted his Symphony No. 8 in Vienna, and Tchaikovsky presented "The Nutcracker" ballet in St. Petersburg. Diesel patented his internal-combustion engine. The first automatic telephone switchboard was introduced. Iron and steel workers went on strike in the U.S. The Cape-Johannesburg railroad was completed. The first canned pineapples appeared on the market. "Gentleman Jim" Corbett defeated John L. Sullivan to win the heavyweight boxing championship. ... And now you know!
