Forever Young: Introduction
People often remark to me that I look much younger than I am. One person I worked with told me, "You don't look at all your age." Another said she was "shocked" when she found out how old I was. People routinely guess me to be around 10 years younger (occasionally even more) than I actually am.
It might all be attributable to good genes. But I don't think so. I'm convinced that it stems from a conscious and deliberate decision I made 20 years ago never to become like the "old" people (50 and up) I observed around me at the time. I vowed never to become old--in thought, behavior, or appearance.
It seems to have worked. I certainly look older with every passing year--no one will mistake me for a twenty-something--but I don't look "old," in my opinion, and in the opinion of many who have commented on it.
Ever since making my decision not to get "old," I've taken specific steps and adopted behaviors that I think have worked to help keep me young. These include mental attitude, physical activities and behaviors, use of particular nutritional supplements, and judicious use of a very few cosmetic enhancers. I'm convinced that mental attitude, stemming from the decision to stay youthful, is responsible for 50% of my success. Cosmetic help is at most 10% of it. The other components fall somewhere in the middle of the 10-50% range. In other words, I'm not faking (much of) it!
In these "Forever Young" posts I intend to reveal my secrets, such as they are. I think that anyone of any age can use them either to keep from getting "old" in the first place, or to become younger looking and younger feeling at any time they decide to begin trying them. I can't guarantee results, of course, and your mileage, as they say, may vary.
Most of these secrets are not really secrets, although I expect that some may be new to you. I discovered them by reading both the scientific literature on anti-aging research and life extension, and the anecdotal experiences of other individuals. Finally, I used myself as my own guinea pig. Our abundant cadre of professional nannies would frown on this. Tough. It's my body and my life.
Since I continue to seek out and research the latest news in this area, I will also share with you anything I find that looks interesting. I will also have occational guest articles on this topic. They will all be labeled, "Forevever Young." If this is a topic that interests you, then look for that phrase among my postings. If it's not, you can just skip over those.
May we all stay forever young!

Sunscreen is very important!
My friend Julie is about 40 now, she looks much younger because she has been wearing sunscreen every day and avoiding the sun since her teens.
Thanks for the comment, Jacqueline. I agree with you about sunscreen. Not being a very outdoorsy person, I don't worry about that much. However, when I do do something like the sea kayaking day trip I took last summer, I make sure at least to wear a broad-brimmed hat and use some sunscreen as well. (BTW, folks, check out Jacqueline's blog. I like her attitude.)
