PlayStation Portable: Time to Join the Bandwagon?

Will wonders never cease?

The PlayStation Portable could be the first handheld gaming device to make me actually consider acquiring one. The buzz around it is undeniable; according to Stuff Magazine it beats the iPod into second place in the "top ten essentials" list which predicts what gadget lovers will covet this year. The PSP plays movie videos and music, has wifi capability, a reportedly gorgeous screen and excellent stereo sound. Sony expected to sell a million of them in the first few days following its American launch, and that prediction appears to have held up (it has been on sale since December, 2004, in Europe and Japan). If you get one, you might as well spring for the $250 PSP Value Pack, which includes player, memory card, carrying case and a copy of the movie Spider-Man 2.

One early purchaser, a computer programmer, said, "I never actually owned a Sony video game before, but this one pushed me over the edge. I'm really, really impressed. The graphics are excellent, the screen is really bright. It's better than I thought it would be."

And at least one person broke the law to get a PSP early. A man in Charlotte, N.C., allegedly made off with 12 PSPs he stole from a GameStop store. Police said when a clerk confronted him, he tried to knock her eyeglasses off.

Assuming you intend to buy one rather than steal it, among the places with PSPs for sale is Amazon.com.
