Future Perfect

Commentary and news section of the Golf In The Year 2000 web site, which includes the book of that title.

Tracking news about the site and book and commenting on speculative fiction, Victorian-era literature, technology, futurism, life extension, extropianism and ... maybe ... golf.

Wasn't the future wonderful?

Reminder

From time to time I like to invite readers of this blog to check out the main site, Golf in the Year 2000. It includes the full text (first time ever on the web) of an odd little book published in 1892 by a Scottish golf named J. McCullough under the pen name of J.A.C.K.

The book chronicles the tale of a character named Alexander J. Gibson who falls into a deep sleep in 1892, only to awaken in the year 2000. The book predicted bullet trains, television, digital watches and women's liberation, among other wonders.

In early 2005, a collector of golf memorabilia paid $2,240 for a first edition of the book. This made news around the world.

Although original copies of Golf in the Year 2000 are obviously quite rare, facsimile editions have been published from time to time. When I discovered that there was no text available of the book on the web, I obtained one of those reprints and proceeded to scan it and place it on this web site.

It's really an enjoyable read, whether or not you play or even like golf. I hope you'll read it for yourself, and be sure to let me know what you think.
