Victoria vs. Edward

The Victorian era constitutes one of our several, improbably collated, themes here at Future Perfect. If you've ever wondered, "Hmmm ... what's the difference between Victorian style and Edwardian style?" (Edwardian referring to the years following the death of Victoria and the ascension of King Edward), you can find an answer here.

In short, the Edwardian style "rejected [the] elaborate rigidity of Victorian decor."

King Edward of Great Britain, "[s]on of the quite proper Queen Victoria, ... was her antithesis. It was her long reign and life that kept Edward off of the throne, much to her relief. Partying and womanizing was his history, and his mother feared for the monarchy once he became king. Surprisingly, he turned out to be a very effective leader during his short reign. He was well-liked by his subjects and helped to loosen the cultural restraints of the Victorian era.

"Victoria’s time period, which had embraced all that was proper and ornate, had run its course. The public was ready for less complicated, easier décor and lifestyle even before Victoria’s death. For this reason, the Edwardian Era is said to have stretched from 1890 until the beginning of the Great War."
