Scots SF Author Up for Hugo
In that our parent web site, Golf in the Year 2000, salutes and makes available the work of J. McCullough, arguably the first Scots science fiction writer, we want to note that one of today's brightest Scots SF authors is in the running for the top prize in that field--a Hugo Award.
The Hugos are named for one of the 20th century's pioneer publishers of science fiction, which he called "scientifiction"--Hugo Gernsback. The awards are voted on by fans serving as delegates to the World Science Fiction Convention.
Scotland's Iain Banks is among those nominated for a Hugo for best science fiction writer of the year. The winner will be announced during the World Science Fiction Convention set for Glasgow from August 4 to 8. That event is expected to bring more than 4000 people and £4 million (nearly $8 million) of business the city.
Banks is best known as the author of The Crow Road
. He was nominated, though, for this year's work, The Algebraist
.
