Don Quixote in India
"Don Quixote is like the Mahabharata of Spain." -- Interesting comparison from the Spanish ambassador in India.
As part of the 400th anniversary observance of the first publication of Don Quixote, a traveling exhibition about the novel and its literary significance recently made a stopover in Delhi.
"There are few works which have inspired artists from varied fields, like Picasso, Borges and Orson Welles, even a modern commercial for sports shoes with Quixote modelling Reebok Classics,’’Ambassador Rafael Conde said.
But what would Don Quixote have done if he had found himself among the ranks of warriors lined up on the plain of Kurukshetra prior to the start of the great battle? Would he have succumbed to the same self-doubts as did Arjuna? And if not--for such would hardly be in character for him--where then would be the opportunity for dialoguing with god about man's duty, non-attachment to fruits, etc.? Would Krishna have appeared to him in the guise of Sancho Panza?
